About the book:
Music offers Kate sweet refuge from her troubles . . . but real freedom is sweeter.
In Westerville, Ohio, 1855, Kate Winter’s dreams are almost within reach. As the first woman to graduate from Otterbein College, she’ll be guaranteed her deepest wish: escape from the dark secret haunting her family. But with her mother determined to marry her off to a wealthy man, Kate must face reality. She has to run. Now. And she has the perfect plan. Join the upcoming musical performance—and use it to mask her flight.
Ben Hanby, Otterbein College’s musical genius, sees Kate Winter as an enigmatic creature, notable for her beauty, yet painfully shy. Then he hears her sing—and the glory of her voice moves him as never before. He determines to cast her in his musical and uncover the mystery that is Kate. Still, he must keep his own secret to himself. Not even this intriguing woman can know that his passionate faith is driving him to aid fugitives on the Underground Railroad.
A terrifying accident brings Kate and Ben together, but threatens to shatter both their secrets and their dreams. Kate can no longer deny the need to find her courage—and her voice—if she is to sing a new song for their future.

My Thoughts
Sweeter Than Birdsong had a special place in my heart, before I even cracked the cover and that is because it is set in Westerville Ohio, Otterbein College which is only about a Hour and half away from my hometown. so i knew when I read about this book a just knew that I had to review it. Not only that but the novel was inspired by real historical people had me intrigued from the start.
We all know that certain songs have a special place in our hearts every time that it is heard, but I feel that music can bring about all kinds of emotions such a anger, love, peace and what i think is the most important emotion hope. That is exactly what music does for both Kate and Ben but both of them have pasts that they rather ignore but they are both enthralled with each other and would love to find out more about each other and themselves.
Kate and Ben are very complex people that they reader can relate too. Elliott perfectly describes them that you can feel yourself right there beside Kate and Ben like you are one or both of their friends. Wanting them to get together and be truthful with each other and themselves.
I would recommended Sweeter Than Birdsong if you love a story that is full of hope and faith and if you love novels that a based on real people then you also get a bonus!

Sounds like a very interesting book. Thanks for the review.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great book! I live in Columbus, Ohio, about 5 minutes away from Westerville, and my nephew is attending Otterbein College right now! I am definitely going to get a copy of this book, and one for my sister as well because we both like the same types of books, and she actually lives in Westerville:) Thanks for bringing it to my attention:)
ReplyDeleteThank you so taking the time to review my novel and for your gracious words! I always am especially happy when I hear from readers who know Otterbein and have that extra connection with the story. I have quite a bond with Otterbein and Westerville now because of my years working on the series. When I was just up there for a signing, the very nice Otterbein bookstore manager gave me an Otterbein t-shirt and mug. Woo-hoo! I also love your cat symbols--my daughter would too as she is a huge cat fan. :-)
ReplyDeleteIf you have the chance to post your review on Amazon, I would be grateful! It's a challenging time for new authors--readers are reluctant to risk trying new writers, in a down economy, and so every positive review helps them feel more comfortable. Thanks again.
I've heard some great things about this book. It sounds amazing. I've already added it to my wish list.
